REACH is a unique health research institution in Malawi due to its mix of social science and
clinical researchers. Such a combined approach to health research ensures communities
perspectives are brought to health services and disease control, thereby providing
opportunities for developing disease control and management strategies that are acceptable
and sustainable.
The Trust’s research aims to make health policy and practice in Malawi more equitable and
accessible for the poor and vulnerable. This includes exploring ways to strengthen the national
health system within the context of limited human and, financial resources.
The Trust’s work makes a difference to the lives of the poor through use of its research to influence
national policy and transform practice. This is done through close collaboration with policy makers
and communities to ensure the research focuses on issues that are relevant and the results can be
practically applied to addressing existing policy gaps.
REACH Trust has been instrumental in bridging gaps between research, policy and practice. Since
its inception, REACH’s work has ensured equity and gender perspectives are built into disease
control initiatives and policies. Research conducted by the Trust has contributed to more equitable
policies in TB, HIV and AIDS in Malawi as well as evidence-based implementation of the Essential
Health Package. For example, the acceleration of equity in access to ART was born out of
research conducted by REACH.
